Background of the Study
Linguistic globalization has accelerated in the 21st century, affecting languages worldwide through the influx of borrowed terminology. In Nigeria, contact with global media and international commerce has led to the adoption of foreign words and expressions, particularly in technical, commercial, and cultural domains (Okeke, 2023). This study examines how borrowed terminology is integrated into Nigerian semantic domains, reshaping meaning and language use. Borrowed terms are often adapted to fit local phonological and morphological patterns, resulting in hybrid expressions that carry both original and localized meanings (Afolabi, 2024). The research analyzes corpora from media, advertisements, and academic texts to trace semantic shifts resulting from language contact. By evaluating the processes of lexical borrowing and semantic adaptation, the study aims to understand the impact of globalization on Nigerian language, and how these changes influence cultural identity and communication practices (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing evidence of lexical borrowing in Nigerian language, there is limited research on its semantic impact. Existing studies often document the presence of borrowed terminology without examining how these words alter existing semantic domains or create new ones (Okeke, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of the broader implications of globalization on Nigerian semantics and cultural identity. Without systematic analysis, the potential for meaning divergence or convergence in various domains remains unclear. This study seeks to address these issues by analyzing borrowed terminology and its influence on semantic domains in Nigeria (Afolabi, 2024).

The insights will benefit linguists and cultural policymakers by clarifying how global influences reshape semantic domains and affect cultural identity (Okeke, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of borrowed terminology in selected Nigerian texts and media.
