Background of the Study
Social media campaigns in Nigeria have revolutionized public discourse, with Twitter activism emerging as a potent tool for social and political mobilization. This study examines pragmatic innovations in Nigerian social media campaigns by analyzing how Twitter activists employ novel language strategies to capture attention and influence opinion. Activists often incorporate humor, irony, and emotive punctuation as pragmatic devices to convey urgency and solidarity (Uche, 2023). These innovative strategies allow for flexible, context-dependent communication that challenges traditional media norms. By comparing different Twitter campaigns, the research seeks to identify the key pragmatic constructs that underpin successful activism. The study employs discourse analysis and content analysis of tweets to reveal how language is adapted to foster engagement and drive social change. Findings will provide insights into the evolution of digital rhetoric and its role in shaping public opinion in Nigeria (Afolabi, 2024), highlighting the dynamic interplay between language and activism (Chinonso, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of Twitter activism in Nigerian social movements, there is limited research on the pragmatic innovations that drive these campaigns. Existing studies often focus on quantitative metrics rather than the qualitative aspects of language use, leaving a gap in our understanding of how pragmatic devices are employed to achieve communicative goals (Uche, 2023). This deficiency hampers efforts to develop effective digital communication strategies for social change. Without systematic analysis, the potential of pragmatic innovations to influence public opinion remains underexplored. This study aims to address these shortcomings by providing a comparative analysis of pragmatic constructs in Twitter activism, elucidating their impact on campaign success (Afolabi, 2024).
