Background of the Study
Digital media have revolutionized language use in Nigeria, introducing new patterns in both morphology and syntax. This study explores how texting and email communication influence Nigerian morphosyntax, with a focus on lexical choices, word formation, and sentence structure. Texting, characterized by brevity and informal language, often leads to morphological simplification and innovative abbreviations. In contrast, email communication tends to adhere more closely to formal language norms, though it still exhibits distinct digital markers (Ifeoma, 2023). The comparative nature of this study allows for an examination of how different digital platforms foster divergent linguistic trends. By analyzing corpora from text messages and emails, the research will uncover the underlying processes driving morphological change and syntactic adaptation in the digital era (Chinonso, 2024). This investigation aims to contribute to the understanding of language evolution in Nigeria, providing insights into the balance between digital innovation and linguistic standardization (Afolabi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although digital communication has transformed language use, there is limited research on how texting and email affect Nigerian morphosyntax. Most studies have either focused on informal texting language or formal email communication without offering a comparative perspective (Ifeoma, 2023). This lack of systematic analysis obscures the influence of digital media on word formation and sentence structure. The absence of empirical data on these variations hampers efforts to adapt educational strategies and language policies to contemporary communication practices. This study seeks to address this gap by providing a detailed comparative analysis of morphosyntactic patterns in texting and email, elucidating the dynamics of digital language change (Chinonso, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian texting.
  2. To compare these features with those in email communication.
  3. To evaluate the impact of digital media on language standardization.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic features characterize texting in Nigeria?
  2. How do these features differ from those in email communication?
  3. What implications do these differences have for formal language use?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of morphosyntax in Nigerian digital communication, offering insights into language change driven by digital media. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by clarifying how digital platforms influence language structure (Ifeoma, 2023; Afolabi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of texting and email communication in Nigerian digital media.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interaction of morphological and syntactic structures in language.
  • Texting: Informal written communication via mobile devices.
  • Email Communication: Formal or semi-formal electronic messaging.
