Background of the Study
Proverbial expressions are a cornerstone of Nigerian oral tradition, encapsulating wisdom, moral values, and cultural narratives. In this study, the focus is on the semantic richness of proverbs in two major Nigerian languages: Yoruba and Igbo. Yoruba proverbs are renowned for their lyrical and metaphorical quality, often employing elaborate imagery and symbolism, while Igbo proverbs are typically succinct yet profound, conveying deep insights in a few words (Afolabi, 2023). This comparative study explores how each language’s proverbs construct meaning, using various semantic devices such as metaphor, metonymy, and hyperbole. By analyzing a corpus of proverbs from both language groups, the research aims to map out the layers of meaning inherent in these expressions and examine how they contribute to cultural identity and social cohesion. The study also considers the impact of modernization on the usage and interpretation of traditional proverbs, highlighting the dynamic relationship between language, culture, and societal change (Nwosu, 2024). Ultimately, the research seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the cognitive and cultural dimensions of proverbial language in Nigeria (Chisom, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged cultural importance of proverbs, there is limited comparative research on the semantic richness of Yoruba and Igbo proverbial expressions. Most studies treat proverbs in isolation rather than examining cross-linguistic variations and their cultural implications (Okeke, 2023). This gap hampers our understanding of how different semantic devices are employed to convey nuanced meanings and reinforce cultural identity. Without comprehensive comparative analysis, it is difficult to appreciate the full cognitive and cultural value embedded in these traditional expressions. This study aims to address this deficiency by systematically comparing Yoruba and Igbo proverbs, thereby contributing to a broader understanding of Nigerian indigenous wisdom (Nwosu, 2024).
