Background of the Study
In Nigeria, regional accents are a prominent feature of everyday communication, influencing not only pronunciation but also syntactic patterns. In Lagos, a melting pot of diverse linguistic backgrounds, public announcements serve as a critical medium for disseminating information. This study examines how regional accents affect the syntax of these announcements. Speakers with distinct accents may employ different sentence structures, word orders, and grammatical nuances that reflect their linguistic heritage (Oluwaseun, 2023). These syntactic variations can have implications for clarity and audience comprehension, especially in a cosmopolitan environment where multiple dialects converge. By analyzing recordings of public announcements and conducting audience surveys, the research aims to identify syntactic differences correlated with regional accent variation. The study further explores whether these differences facilitate or hinder effective communication in public settings and how they contribute to the broader discourse on language standardization in urban Nigeria (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although regional accents are known to influence language, there is limited research on their effect on syntax in public announcements in Lagos. Existing studies often focus solely on phonetic differences, neglecting the structural implications for syntax (Oluwaseun, 2023). This gap hampers the understanding of how syntactic variations impact message clarity and audience engagement. Without detailed analysis, it remains unclear whether regional syntactic differences contribute to communication breakdowns or enrich the diversity of public discourse. This study seeks to address these issues by providing a comprehensive analysis of syntactic variations in public announcements influenced by regional accents in Lagos (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of regional accents and syntactic variation in Nigerian public announcements, providing insights for improving communication clarity. The findings will assist policymakers, communication experts, and educators in refining public announcement strategies to accommodate linguistic diversity (Oluwaseun, 2023; Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing the effect of regional accents on syntax in public announcements in Lagos.
