Background of the Study
Morphological complexity refers to the intricate structure of words, including the use of affixes, reduplication, and compounding. In Nigerian indigenous languages, such as Igbo, the lexicon exhibits remarkable morphological richness that reflects deep cultural histories and cognitive processes (Eze, 2023). This study focuses on the Igbo language to analyze its morphological structures and understand how these features contribute to meaning formation and language evolution. Igbo, with its extensive use of derivational and inflectional morphology, offers an ideal case for exploring how word formation processes capture cultural nuances and facilitate communication (Nwachukwu, 2024). Through a comparative analysis, this research will document patterns of morphological complexity in the Igbo lexicon, comparing traditional word forms with those emerging from modern usage. The investigation will employ linguistic fieldwork, corpus analysis, and descriptive grammar methods to map out morphological processes and evaluate their impact on semantic interpretation. By revealing the interplay between morphology and cultural identity, the study contributes to broader discussions on language preservation and the theoretical understanding of morphological systems (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized morphological richness of the Igbo language, there is limited comprehensive research on its complexity in contemporary contexts. Existing literature often focuses on historical or theoretical aspects without addressing the practical implications of morphological variation for language use and preservation (Okonkwo, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how modern influences and language contact might be affecting traditional word formation processes in Igbo. Without systematic documentation, valuable linguistic features risk being lost or misinterpreted, undermining efforts to preserve cultural heritage. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of morphological complexity in the Igbo lexicon, thereby supporting language maintenance and educational initiatives (Nwachukwu, 2024).
