Background of the Study
Nigerian folk dramas are vibrant cultural expressions that blend storytelling, music, and dramatic performance. Central to these performances is phonological articulation—the clear and expressive production of speech sounds—which not only conveys the narrative but also preserves indigenous linguistic traditions. Traditional theatre in Nigeria, often performed in local dialects and enriched with ritualistic elements, relies heavily on precise articulation to evoke emotion and ensure audience engagement (Adewale, 2023). In these settings, actors utilize distinct tonal modulations, stress patterns, and rhythmic delivery to differentiate characters and accentuate dramatic moments. The interplay between linguistic creativity and cultural performance offers a window into how indigenous languages are maintained and evolved through art (Bello, 2024). Furthermore, the phonetic nuances in folk dramas serve as an important repository of historical language practices, reflecting socio-cultural dynamics and community values. Through acoustic analysis and field observations of live performances, this study aims to document and evaluate the phonological strategies employed by performers. It investigates how these techniques contribute to the aesthetic appeal of traditional theatre and their role in sustaining linguistic heritage. By bridging performance studies and phonetics, the research provides insights into the pedagogical and cultural significance of folk dramas in Nigeria, highlighting their function as both entertainment and education in language preservation (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural importance of Nigerian folk dramas, limited research has focused on the specific phonological articulation techniques used in traditional theatre. Previous studies have often concentrated on narrative content and performance style, neglecting how precise articulation contributes to the overall impact and cultural preservation of these art forms (Okoro, 2023). This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of the role phonetic clarity plays in conveying meaning and emotion in folk performances. Without detailed analysis, it remains unclear how variations in articulation affect audience comprehension and the intergenerational transmission of language. This study seeks to address these deficiencies by systematically examining the phonological features of traditional theatre, providing empirical data that can inform both linguistic theory and cultural policy (Eze, 2024).
