Background of the Study
Nigerian folk music is a dynamic repository of cultural heritage where traditional song structures function as vehicles for linguistic innovation and morphological productivity. In these songs, repetitive patterns, call-and-response elements, and lyrical improvisations create opportunities for generating new word forms, affixes, and compounds that enrich the language (Ibrahim, 2023). Morphological productivity here refers to the creative ability of these songs to form novel lexical items and adapt grammatical structures, reflecting the cultural context and lived experiences of Nigerian communities (Ogun, 2024). Traditional songs, passed down orally through generations, provide a living laboratory for linguistic experimentation. They not only serve entertainment and cultural preservation purposes but also contribute to the evolution of language by constantly updating the lexicon through innovative morphological processes (Nwankwo, 2025). By systematically analyzing song lyrics and performance recordings, this study aims to document the instances of morphological innovation, assess their frequency, and evaluate their impact on the broader language. The interplay between fixed traditional forms and creative deviations illustrates the dynamic relationship between cultural identity and linguistic expression, highlighting the critical role of folk music in sustaining and evolving Nigerian language practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich linguistic traditions inherent in Nigerian folk music, there is limited empirical research on the morphological productivity exhibited within traditional song structures. Most studies concentrate on the musical and cultural dimensions of folk music, often overlooking the innovative linguistic processes that contribute to word formation and grammatical adaptation (Adetayo, 2023). This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how traditional songs actively shape language evolution and cultural identity. The oral transmission of folk music, while vibrant, poses challenges for systematic documentation and analysis of its morphological features. Consequently, scholars and cultural historians lack detailed evidence on the extent and nature of these morphological innovations (Babatunde, 2024). This study aims to address this shortfall by rigorously evaluating the morphological productivity in Nigerian folk music and determining its role in linguistic and cultural continuity.
