Background of the Study
Yoruba folk narratives, which encompass myths, legends, folktales, and proverbs, serve as a linguistic and cultural repository for the Yoruba people. These oral traditions are not only fundamental in preserving Yoruba heritage but also play a crucial role in shaping phonological patterns in spoken Yoruba (Akinlabi, 2024). Yoruba is a tonal language, where the pronunciation of a word can change its meaning based on pitch variations. The rhythmic structure, tone patterns, and syllabic emphasis in folk narratives have a significant impact on how Yoruba phonology is perceived and transmitted across generations (Oyetade, 2023).
In rural communities, folk narratives are traditionally performed in communal settings, allowing for the reinforcement of phonetic conventions through repetition and song-like intonations (Bamgbose, 2024). Such linguistic structures influence not only native speakers but also learners of the Yoruba language, shaping their pronunciation and phonetic understanding. This influence extends beyond local communities, affecting the phonological variations observed among Yoruba speakers in urban settings and across diasporic communities (Ajayi, 2025).
However, modern influences, such as media exposure and formal education, have led to shifts in traditional phonological structures, sometimes resulting in the loss of native tonal precision. The interplay between folk narratives and contemporary linguistic dynamics remains underexplored, making it necessary to critically assess the role of oral traditions in maintaining and modifying Yoruba phonology.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich oral tradition of the Yoruba people, there is limited empirical research on how these folk narratives influence phonological patterns among speakers, particularly in rural communities. With increasing urbanization and digitalization, traditional oral transmission is declining, potentially altering the phonological distinctiveness of Yoruba speech (Owolabi, 2024). Furthermore, younger generations are increasingly exposed to external linguistic influences, which may impact their ability to sustain the phonological integrity embedded in folk narratives (Fagborun, 2023).
While previous studies have explored Yoruba phonology, there is insufficient focus on the extent to which oral traditions shape phonetic and tonal variations across different generations. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining the phonological impact of Yoruba folk narratives on speakers in rural communities, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on linguistic preservation and phonological evolution.

Additionally, the findings will be beneficial to linguists, educators, and policymakers interested in indigenous language revitalization.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the impact of Yoruba folk narratives on phonology within rural communities. It does not explore broader sociolinguistic changes in urban Yoruba-speaking areas or other phonological influences beyond folk narratives.
