Background of the Study
The rapid expansion of social media in Nigeria has fostered a fertile ground for linguistic creativity, giving rise to semantic innovations that manifest in memetic expressions. This study investigates how Nigerian social media users repurpose language to create memes that reflect cultural, political, and social commentary (Okeke, 2023). Memetic expressions, characterized by playful modifications of meaning and innovative wordplay, have become a popular medium for expressing collective identities and social critiques. The study explores the evolution of semantic shifts within online communities, examining how new meanings are negotiated and widely adopted across digital platforms (Eze, 2024). This investigation employs qualitative content analysis and discourse studies to understand the interplay between digital culture and language innovation. Furthermore, it highlights the role of memes as dynamic linguistic artifacts that challenge traditional semantic boundaries and foster a participatory culture in communication (Nnamdi, 2025). By focusing on Nigerian social media, the study contributes to the broader discourse on language change in digital contexts, emphasizing the significance of memetic expressions in reflecting and shaping societal values.

Statement of the Problem
While memetic expressions have become ubiquitous in Nigerian social media, there remains a significant gap in research concerning the underlying semantic innovations driving these phenomena. Traditional semantic frameworks are often ill-equipped to capture the dynamic and context-dependent nature of meme language (Chinonso, 2023). The absence of systematic analysis leaves critical questions about the origins, evolution, and societal impact of these semantic shifts unanswered. This gap is particularly problematic as memetic expressions play an increasingly influential role in public discourse, potentially affecting perceptions and social attitudes. Without empirical data on semantic innovation in digital media, researchers and policymakers lack the insights necessary to understand the broader implications for language evolution and cultural identity (Ijeoma, 2024). This study aims to address this shortfall by providing a comprehensive analysis of memetic semantics in Nigerian social media (Uche, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document semantic innovations in Nigerian memetic expressions.
  2. To analyze the sociocultural influences on semantic shifts in online communication.
  3. To assess the broader implications of these innovations for language evolution.

Research Questions

  1. What semantic innovations are evident in Nigerian social media memes?
  2. How do cultural and social factors drive these semantic shifts?
  3. What impact do memetic expressions have on conventional language usage?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers an in-depth exploration of semantic innovation in Nigerian social media, highlighting how memes reshape language and reflect societal changes. The findings will contribute to the fields of linguistics, digital communication, and cultural studies, providing valuable insights for educators, media practitioners, and policymakers. By uncovering the mechanisms behind semantic shifts, the study will aid in understanding the evolving nature of language in the digital era (Okeke, 2023; Uche, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the topic only, focusing solely on semantic innovations in Nigerian social media culture.

Definitions of Terms

  • Semantic Innovations: The creation of new meanings or reinterpretations of existing words.
  • Memetic Expressions: Linguistic artifacts, often humorous or satirical, that spread rapidly online.
  • Social Media Culture: The practices, values, and communication styles that emerge from online community interactions.
