Background of the Study
Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a vibrant linguistic phenomenon, especially within digital communication platforms. This study investigates the morphological features of Nigerian Pidgin as used in chatrooms and other online forums, emphasizing its role as a dynamic tool for everyday communication. The rapid evolution of digital language has facilitated the creation of novel morphological structures that both reflect and shape the sociocultural identity of its speakers (Emeka, 2023). Online chatrooms serve as a microcosm where linguistic creativity thrives, and traditional grammatical rules are often subverted for efficiency, humor, or community identity (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing chat transcripts and digital interactions, this study aims to document how morphological innovations in Nigerian Pidgin contribute to its resilience and adaptability in the digital era. The investigation further explores the intersection of technology, language, and social identity, providing insights into how digital platforms act as incubators for linguistic change. This research is particularly timely given the growing influence of digital media on language use, underscoring the importance of understanding emerging linguistic phenomena in a rapidly evolving communicative landscape (Ndukwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian Pidgin is widely used in digital communication, there is a scarcity of empirical studies addressing its morphological characteristics in online contexts. The informal nature of chatroom language poses challenges for traditional linguistic analysis, as standard morphological frameworks often fail to capture the fluidity and creativity inherent in Nigerian Pidgin (Umeh, 2023). This gap in research restricts our understanding of how digital environments foster morphological innovation and affect language standardization. Moreover, the rapid evolution of online communication necessitates a timely investigation into these changes, as they bear implications for language policy and educational practices. Without a clear understanding of these morphological trends, efforts to document and preserve Nigerian Pidgin in the digital age remain insufficient (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to fill this void by providing a comprehensive analysis of morphological patterns within Nigerian Pidgin used in digital chatrooms (Chinwe, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a detailed examination of the morphological innovations in Nigerian Pidgin within digital communication. The findings will contribute to the broader understanding of language evolution in online environments and inform language policy, digital communication studies, and educational practices. By documenting these changes, the research supports efforts to recognize and preserve the linguistic creativity inherent in Nigerian Pidgin (Emeka, 2023; Ndukwe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the topic only, focusing solely on Nigerian Pidgin morphology in digital chatroom communication.
