Background of the study
In competitive landscape of Nigerian business, effective communication is crucial. Email exchanges have become a primary medium for professional interactions, and the use of pragmatic politeness strategies is central to maintaining rapport and ensuring clarity. This study examines the pragmatic politeness mechanisms employed in Nigerian business emails, including forms of address, indirect language, and mitigating expressions. Such strategies are vital for managing interpersonal relationships and conveying respect in a culturally diverse business environment (Nwankwo, 2023). The research will analyze a corpus of business emails from various sectors, identifying patterns in language use that reflect politeness conventions. It will also explore how these strategies influence message reception and the negotiation of power dynamics in professional settings. The findings aim to provide recommendations for enhancing communication efficiency and fostering positive workplace interactions. Furthermore, this study contributes to the broader field of pragmatics by contextualizing politeness within the unique socio-cultural framework of Nigerian business communication (Ogun, 2024; Adetola, 2025).

1. To identify politeness strategies in Nigerian business emails.
2. To analyze their impact on professional interactions.
3. To recommend improvements for effective email communication.
Research questions:

2. How do these strategies affect message reception?
3. What practices can enhance pragmatic politeness in email exchanges?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of pragmatic politeness in Nigerian business email communication, offering insights for corporate communication training and policy formulation. The findings will aid in improving professional interactions and fostering a respectful business environment (Adetola, 2025).
