Background of the study
Twitter has emerged as a powerful platform for shaping language trends, particularly among Nigerian youth. Viral hashtags and tweets contribute to the development of new pragmatic conventions within Nigerian youth slang. This study examines how Twitter influences pragmatic aspects such as tone, politeness strategies, and context-specific language use. The rapid spread of memes and hashtags encourages linguistic creativity and the adoption of informal conventions that deviate from traditional norms (Akinwale, 2023). By analyzing trending hashtags, tweet structures, and user interactions, the research aims to uncover how Twitter mediates pragmatic shifts in youth language. These changes reflect broader sociocultural dynamics and influence digital identity formation, with implications for language evolution and communication strategies in online spaces (Ogun, 2024; Adetola, 2025). The study situates its analysis within theories of digital pragmatics and sociolinguistics, contributing to an understanding of how technology drives linguistic innovation.
Statement of the problem
Although Twitter has a profound impact on the development of Nigerian youth slang, its role in shaping pragmatic conventions remains underexplored. The rapid evolution of hashtag usage and informal tweet structures has led to new pragmatic norms that are not yet fully understood (Akinwale, 2023). The absence of systematic research on this topic hinders the ability to gauge how these changes affect communication, identity, and social interaction among Nigerian youth. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the pragmatic implications of viral hashtags on Twitter and their influence on youth slang, thus providing insights into digital language innovation (Ogun, 2024).
