Background of the Study
Digital culture has brought about significant changes in language, with social media serving as a dynamic platform for morphosyntactic adaptation. In Nigeria, the language used on social media platforms often deviates from standard forms, incorporating creative word formations, syntactic simplifications, and code-switching. This study examines the morphosyntactic adaptations that occur in Nigerian social media language by comparing data from various platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These adaptations reflect the interplay between traditional linguistic norms and the fast-paced, informal nature of digital communication (Afolabi, 2023). The research explores how factors such as character limits, audience diversity, and technological constraints contribute to innovative morphosyntactic constructions. Through a comparative analysis, the study aims to document the ways in which digital culture influences language structure and to assess the implications for language evolution in Nigeria (Olu, 2024). The findings will inform our understanding of how digital media transform linguistic practices and provide insights for educators and content creators seeking to navigate this rapidly changing landscape (Nwankwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident impact of digital media on language, there is limited systematic research on the morphosyntactic adaptations within Nigerian social media discourse. Variations in word order, phrase structure, and code-switching practices can lead to inconsistencies and challenges in understanding digital language (Afolabi, 2023). The absence of comparative studies on different social media platforms hampers our ability to fully grasp the scope of these changes and their long-term implications for language evolution (Olu, 2024). This study addresses this gap by analyzing morphosyntactic patterns across multiple platforms, aiming to provide a comprehensive picture of digital language transformation in Nigeria (Nwankwo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphosyntactic adaptations in Nigerian social media language.

  2. To compare these adaptations across various digital platforms.

  3. To assess the implications for language evolution and digital literacy.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic changes are observed in Nigerian social media discourse?

  2. How do these changes differ across platforms?

  3. What impact do they have on overall language use in digital contexts?

Significance of the Study
This study advances our understanding of digital language evolution by examining morphosyntactic adaptations in Nigerian social media. Its findings will benefit educators, linguists, and digital content creators by offering insights into the mechanisms of language change in online environments and informing strategies to enhance digital literacy (Afolabi, 2023; Olu, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing morphosyntactic adaptations in social media language within Nigeria and does not extend to offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interaction between morphology and syntax in language.

  • Digital Culture: The norms and practices that emerge from online interactions.

  • Social Media Language: Informal language used on digital platforms.
