Background of the Study
Cultural preservation is critical in maintaining linguistic diversity, especially in a country like Nigeria with its myriad indigenous languages. Morphology, the study of word formation, is deeply intertwined with cultural identity. Indigenous language revitalization projects in Nigeria aim to preserve traditional word forms, affixation patterns, and compound structures that have been passed down through generations. These morphological features often encapsulate cultural narratives, historical contexts, and social norms (Chukwu, 2023). This study examines how cultural preservation efforts—through educational programs, media initiatives, and community workshops—impact morphological structures in indigenous languages. By focusing on revitalization projects, the research documents changes in word formation processes and assesses whether these efforts help maintain or even reinvigorate traditional morphological patterns. The study also considers how modern influences, such as digital media and urbanization, interact with preservation strategies, potentially leading to hybrid forms that blend traditional and contemporary elements (Olu, 2024). Through a case study approach, the research seeks to offer insights into effective methodologies for sustaining indigenous language morphology in a rapidly changing world (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous cultural preservation initiatives in Nigeria, there is limited research on their effect on the morphology of indigenous languages. The erosion of traditional word formation processes due to globalization and urbanization poses a significant threat to linguistic heritage (Chukwu, 2023). Without systematic documentation and analysis, the impact of revitalization efforts on morphological structures remains unclear. This study addresses the gap by examining specific case studies of indigenous language revitalization, thereby assessing whether cultural preservation strategies are effective in maintaining traditional morphological features (Olu, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document traditional morphological processes in selected indigenous languages.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of revitalization initiatives on preserving these morphological features.

  3. To propose recommendations for enhancing cultural preservation through language revitalization.

Research Questions

  1. What traditional morphological features are present in the indigenous languages studied?

  2. How do cultural preservation initiatives affect these morphological structures?

  3. What strategies can further enhance the preservation of indigenous morphology?

Significance of the Study
This study offers crucial insights into the intersection of cultural preservation and linguistic morphology. Its findings will assist language policymakers, educators, and cultural activists in developing more effective revitalization programs that safeguard Nigeria’s linguistic heritage (Chukwu, 2023; Olu, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to selected indigenous languages and revitalization programs in Nigeria and does not cover all linguistic communities.

Definitions of Terms
