Background of the Study
Modern Nigerian poetry is a dynamic field that reflects the evolving nature of language through innovative morphological processes. Poets in Nigeria increasingly experiment with word formation techniques—such as compounding, blending, and neologism creation—to express complex emotions and cultural narratives (Chinwe, 2023). This study examines the morphological processes in contemporary Nigerian poetry, comparing lexical innovations across different poetic styles and genres. Through a detailed analysis of selected modern poems, the research investigates how poets break from traditional language forms to create new expressions that resonate with contemporary audiences. The study explores the influence of globalization, digital media, and indigenous cultural practices on morphological creativity. By documenting these innovations, the research aims to provide insights into the evolving landscape of Nigerian literary language and the role of morphological experimentation in reflecting societal changes (Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the creative potential of modern Nigerian poetry, there is limited systematic research on the morphological processes underlying lexical innovations in this genre. The rapid emergence of neologisms and non-standard word formations often challenges traditional linguistic analysis, leading to gaps in our understanding of language evolution in literary contexts (Chinwe, 2023). Without comprehensive studies, the significance of these morphological innovations for cultural expression and literary aesthetics remains underexplored (Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To document morphological processes in modern Nigerian poetry.
To compare lexical innovations across different poetic styles.
To assess the cultural impact of these innovations.
Research Questions
What morphological processes are used in modern Nigerian poetry?
How do lexical innovations differ among poets?
What cultural implications do these innovations carry?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the understanding of language evolution in Nigerian literature by analyzing morphological innovations in modern poetry. Its findings will enrich literary scholarship and support efforts to preserve and celebrate creative language use (Chinwe, 2023; Olu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to selected contemporary Nigerian poems and does not cover older or non-poetic literary genres.
