Background of the Study
Political oratory is a vital element of election campaigns in Nigeria, where the clarity and effectiveness of speech can significantly influence voter perceptions. This study appraises the phonetic patterns used by political candidates during election debates in Lagos, focusing on pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns. Effective articulation and consistent phonetic delivery are crucial for establishing credibility and conveying persuasive messages (Ibrahim, 2023). Lagos, as a major political hub, offers a rich context for analyzing how candidates adapt their speech to meet the demands of a diverse and media-savvy audience. By examining audio recordings of election debates, the research documents the phonetic strategies employed, including the use of rhetorical devices and deliberate modulation to emphasize key points. The study further explores the influence of regional accents and linguistic diversity on phonetic performance. The findings are expected to contribute to the field of political communication by providing insights into how phonetic patterns affect public persuasion and overall election outcomes (Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of phonetic clarity in political debates, there is limited systematic research on the phonetic patterns used in Nigerian election oratory. Variations in pronunciation and intonation can lead to misinterpretations and diminish the persuasive power of political messages (Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of standardized phonetic strategies in election debates in Lagos poses challenges for candidates seeking to reach a diverse electorate. Without detailed analysis, it is difficult to ascertain how phonetic features contribute to successful political communication, ultimately affecting voter engagement and election outcomes (Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze phonetic features in election debate speeches.
To compare phonetic strategies among candidates.
To recommend best practices for enhancing phonetic clarity in political oratory.
Research Questions
What phonetic features are characteristic of Nigerian election debates?
How do phonetic variations affect voter perception?
What strategies can improve phonetic performance in political speeches?
Significance of the Study
This study provides crucial insights into the role of phonetic patterns in Nigerian political oratory, informing candidates and communication trainers on effective speech delivery. Its findings will support the development of best practices for enhancing electoral communication in Lagos (Ibrahim, 2023; Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing audio recordings of election debates in Lagos and does not extend to other political communication contexts.
