Background of the Study
Language modernization in Nigeria is driven by digital transformation, which reshapes syntactic structures in everyday communication. This study explores how modern technological tools and digital media are influencing Nigerian syntax. With the rise of smartphones, social media, and digital content creation, traditional sentence constructions are giving way to more streamlined and informal syntactic patterns. The research focuses on various digital communication channels—including messaging apps, blogs, and online forums—to analyze changes such as syntactic simplification, increased use of ellipsis, and novel sentence constructions. These changes reflect broader sociocultural shifts, as younger generations adopt a digital-first approach to language. The study aims to document the evolution of syntax in this digital era and assess its implications for education and communication. This investigation provides insights into how modernization influences linguistic practices and helps predict future trends in Nigerian language use (Okafor, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread digital adoption, there is limited research on how language modernization affects syntactic structures in Nigeria. The transformation of traditional syntax into more streamlined, informal forms may compromise the complexity and nuance of academic and formal communication (Okafor, 2023). This gap in research impedes efforts to adapt educational curricula and communication strategies to modern language use. Without systematic analysis, the long-term impact of digital transformation on Nigerian syntax remains unclear, affecting language planning and policy (Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document syntactic changes associated with digital communication.

  • To analyze the impact of modernization on traditional syntactic structures.

  • To propose recommendations for integrating modern syntax in formal education.

Research Questions

  • What syntactic modifications are evident in digital communication?

  • How does language modernization affect traditional syntax in Nigeria?

  • What strategies can support the balanced evolution of syntax?

Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the effects of digital transformation on Nigerian syntax, informing educators and policymakers on how to adapt to language modernization. Its findings contribute to preserving linguistic heritage while embracing new communicative forms (Okafor, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to the analysis of digital communication channels and does not extend to offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Modernization: The process by which language adapts to contemporary technological and cultural influences.

  • Syntax: The set of rules that govern sentence structure.

  • Digital Transformation: The integration of digital technology into communication practices.
