Background of the Study
Hashtags have emerged as a vital linguistic tool in digital communication, particularly in Nigerian social media, where they facilitate categorization, expression, and community building. This study examines the morphological adaptation involved in hashtag formation, focusing on how users create and modify words to fit the constraints of digital platforms. The process often involves compounding, blending, and the use of creative abbreviations to form new lexical items (Ibrahim, 2023). Hashtags serve as both markers of digital identity and as vehicles for semantic innovation. By analyzing a corpus of hashtags from popular Nigerian social media posts, the research documents the morphological processes at play and investigates their role in shaping contemporary digital discourse. The study also considers how these adaptations reflect broader trends in language evolution influenced by technology and globalization, ultimately contributing to the dynamic linguistic landscape of Nigeria (Olu, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although hashtag usage is widespread in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited research on the morphological processes underlying their formation. The creative strategies used to form hashtags often deviate from conventional word formation rules, resulting in rapid lexical innovation that is not systematically documented (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap impedes our understanding of how digital communication fosters language change and affects semantic clarity. Without a comprehensive analysis of hashtag formation, it is challenging to assess the impact of digital media on morphological adaptation and to develop strategies for preserving linguistic integrity in the digital age (Olu, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the morphological processes in hashtag formation.
To document common patterns and innovations in Nigerian hashtags.
To evaluate the impact of these adaptations on digital communication.
Research Questions
What morphological processes are evident in hashtag formation?
How do these processes differ from traditional word formation?
What is the impact of hashtag adaptation on semantic clarity?
Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the morphological adaptations driving digital communication in Nigeria, particularly through hashtag formation. Its findings will aid linguists, digital media analysts, and communication specialists in understanding and managing linguistic change in the digital realm (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of hashtag formation in Nigerian digital communication and does not extend to other morphological phenomena.
Definitions of Terms
