Background of the study

Urban centers in Nigeria are melting pots of linguistic diversity where language contact is a daily reality. In these multilingual communities, phonological features are continually reshaped by interactions among speakers of different languages. This study examines how language contact influences Nigerian phonology, focusing on urban areas where indigenous languages, Nigerian English, and other foreign languages converge (Adeniyi, 2023). The dynamic interplay between these languages results in phonetic convergence, divergence, and hybridization. Such contact-induced phonological changes affect pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns, thereby impacting communication effectiveness. By analyzing recorded conversations and conducting sociolinguistic surveys in urban multilingual settings, the research aims to document phonological shifts and their underlying social and linguistic factors (Ogun, 2024; Balogun, 2025). The findings are expected to contribute to theoretical frameworks on language contact and provide practical insights for language planning and educational policy in diverse urban environments.

Statement of the problem

Despite the observable effects of language contact on phonology in urban Nigeria, there is limited empirical research that systematically documents these changes. Variations arising from multilingual interactions often result in inconsistent pronunciation norms, which may hinder clear communication and language standardization (Adeniyi, 2023). This gap in research complicates efforts to understand the full impact of language contact on phonological evolution. Without a detailed analysis, policymakers and educators lack the data needed to support effective language planning and integration strategies. This study seeks to fill this void by examining the phonological outcomes of language contact in urban multilingual communities, thus offering insights into managing linguistic diversity (Ogun, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To document phonological changes in urban multilingual communities.

2. To analyze the impact of language contact on phonological features.

3. To provide recommendations for language policy and education.

Research questions:

1. What phonological changes result from language contact?

2. How does multilingual interaction influence pronunciation?

3. What measures can support phonological standardization?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it investigates the impact of language contact on Nigerian phonology in urban settings, contributing to our understanding of linguistic adaptation in multilingual environments. The insights will inform language policy and educational practices by highlighting strategies to manage phonological diversity (Balogun, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses exclusively on the effects of language contact in urban multilingual communities in Nigeria. It does not extend to rural areas or other aspects of language change.

Definitions of terms:

1. Language Contact: The interaction between speakers of different languages.

2. Phonology: The study of the sound systems of languages.

3. Multilingual Communities: Groups where multiple languages are used in everyday communication.
