Background of the Study
Contemporary Nigerian literature provides a rich field for examining morphosyntactic features that reflect both traditional language practices and modern stylistic innovations. This study analyzes the morphosyntactic structures found in selected contemporary novels, focusing on sentence construction, word formation, and grammatical variations (Chibuzo, 2023). Nigerian authors often blend indigenous linguistic patterns with global literary conventions to create unique narrative voices. Through comparative analysis, the research aims to identify common morphosyntactic trends, such as the use of code-switching, non-standard syntax, and creative morphological adaptations. These features not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the novels but also serve as indicators of cultural identity and social commentary. By documenting these linguistic innovations, the study provides insights into how language evolves in response to both historical influences and contemporary realities (Nwachukwu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025). The findings are expected to enrich academic discourse in literary studies and linguistics, offering a framework for understanding the dynamic interplay between language and literature in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of morphosyntactic features in shaping Nigerian literary expression, there is limited comparative research on these elements in contemporary novels. Variations in syntax and word formation can obscure meaning and complicate literary analysis (Chibuzo, 2023). The absence of systematic studies hinders a deeper understanding of how modern Nigerian authors negotiate between traditional language norms and innovative stylistic choices (Nwachukwu, 2024). This research addresses the gap by examining morphosyntactic features across different literary works, thereby providing insights into the evolving nature of Nigerian literary language and its cultural implications (Adebayo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze morphosyntactic features in contemporary Nigerian novels.
To compare language usage across different authors and genres.
To evaluate the cultural and aesthetic implications of these features.
Research Questions
What morphosyntactic patterns are prevalent in contemporary Nigerian literature?
How do these features vary among different novels?
What impact do they have on narrative style and cultural expression?
Significance of the Study
This study advances our understanding of Nigerian literature by examining morphosyntactic innovations in contemporary novels. The findings will provide valuable insights for literary scholars, linguists, and cultural historians, contributing to a richer analysis of language and identity in Nigerian creative writing (Chibuzo, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to the analysis of morphosyntactic features in a selected corpus of contemporary Nigerian novels and does not extend to other literary forms.
