Background of the Study
Digital media has transformed how Nigerians consume and produce spoken content, notably through podcasts and traditional radio broadcasts. This study examines the impact of these media on phonological patterns, comparing the speech styles prevalent in podcasts with those used in radio news and talk shows. Podcasts, often characterized by conversational tone and spontaneous speech, tend to exhibit more informal phonological features, including relaxed articulation and variable intonation (Afolabi, 2023). In contrast, radio speech generally adheres to standardized pronunciation and clearer enunciation to cater to diverse audiences. By comparing these two modalities, the research aims to identify specific phonological adaptations driven by the medium, such as changes in stress patterns, pitch modulation, and tempo. The study explores how technological differences and audience expectations influence speech production and, ultimately, contribute to evolving phonological norms in Nigerian media. The analysis will help clarify the role of digital media in reshaping traditional broadcasting standards and offer insights into the future of spoken communication in a rapidly digitalizing society (Okoro, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing popularity of podcasts, there is limited comparative research on how digital media platforms influence phonological patterns in Nigerian speech. Variations in articulation and intonation between podcast and radio speech may lead to inconsistencies in audience perception and communication effectiveness (Afolabi, 2023). The lack of systematic analysis creates challenges for broadcasters and media trainers in adapting to evolving speech norms. Without a clear understanding of these phonological differences, efforts to standardize or optimize spoken communication for digital platforms may be undermined (Okoro, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to comparing phonological patterns in Nigerian podcasts and radio broadcasts and does not extend to other digital or traditional media formats.
