Background of the Study
University seminars in Nigeria represent a cornerstone of academic discourse, where the effective exchange of ideas is paramount. Pragmatic coherence—the logical flow and consistency of language use—plays a critical role in ensuring that educational messages are delivered clearly and persuasively (Okafor, 2023). In academic settings, speakers are expected to adhere to both formal and context-specific linguistic norms to facilitate understanding and promote scholarly debate. Nigerian university seminars often involve a blend of indigenous linguistic styles and international academic conventions, resulting in unique pragmatic practices that contribute to the overall coherence of discourse. This study examines the pragmatic coherence of seminar presentations by analyzing recorded sessions and transcriptions from various universities. It explores how factors such as discourse markers, turn-taking, and contextual referencing contribute to the overall effectiveness of communication in an academic environment. The research also considers the challenges posed by language diversity and varying levels of language proficiency among participants, aiming to provide recommendations for enhancing educational discourse (Adebayo, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its importance, pragmatic coherence in Nigerian university seminars has not been thoroughly examined. Inconsistencies in language use and the integration of diverse linguistic influences can lead to fragmented discourse and reduced academic effectiveness (Okafor, 2023). The lack of systematic research into these pragmatic practices hampers efforts to develop strategies that ensure clear and coherent academic communication. Without a clear understanding of the factors that contribute to pragmatic coherence, educators and seminar organizers may struggle to optimize language use in educational settings, thereby affecting overall learning outcomes (Adebayo, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the pragmatic features of Nigerian university seminars.

  2. To evaluate the coherence of educational discourse.

  3. To propose recommendations for enhancing pragmatic coherence in academic settings.

Research Questions

  1. What pragmatic strategies contribute to coherent discourse in university seminars?

  2. How do language diversity and proficiency impact pragmatic coherence?

  3. What measures can improve the clarity of academic presentations?

Significance of the Study
This study provides crucial insights into the pragmatic coherence of Nigerian educational discourse, offering practical recommendations for enhancing communication in university seminars. Its findings will benefit educators, academic administrators, and linguists by promoting more effective and engaging educational interactions (Okafor, 2023; Adebayo, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of pragmatic coherence in Nigerian university seminars and does not extend to other forms of academic communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Coherence: The logical and consistent flow of language in communication.

  • Educational Discourse: Communication practices in academic settings.
