Background of the Study
Effective health communication is vital for public well-being, and semantic transparency—the clarity with which meaning is conveyed—is a key component of this process. In Nigeria, public service announcements (PSAs) play a crucial role in disseminating health-related information. This study examines the semantic transparency of PSAs by comparing messages across different media channels, including television, radio, and online platforms (Ifeanyi, 2023). Transparent language in health communication ensures that messages are easily understood, reducing the risk of misinterpretation and fostering better public compliance with health directives. Nigerian health PSAs must navigate linguistic diversity and cultural nuances, making semantic clarity particularly challenging. The research investigates how different linguistic strategies, such as simple vocabulary, clear syntax, and effective use of visual aids, contribute to the overall transparency of health messages (Obi, 2024). By analyzing a range of PSA samples, the study aims to identify best practices and potential pitfalls in health communication, with the goal of enhancing message clarity and improving public health outcomes (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of semantic transparency in health communication, there is limited comparative analysis of PSAs in Nigeria. Variations in language clarity across different media can lead to misinterpretation and reduced effectiveness of public health campaigns (Ifeanyi, 2023). Inconsistent use of simple and clear language poses challenges for health educators and policymakers, particularly in a multilingual society. This study seeks to address the gap by systematically evaluating the semantic transparency of PSAs, identifying factors that hinder clear communication and proposing strategies to overcome these challenges (Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the semantic transparency of Nigerian health PSAs.

  2. To compare language clarity across various media platforms.

  3. To recommend improvements for enhancing public understanding.

Research Questions

  1. How clear are the messages in Nigerian health PSAs?

  2. What linguistic factors contribute to semantic transparency?

  3. What strategies can improve message clarity in health communication?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to improving public health communication by assessing semantic transparency in Nigerian PSAs. Its findings will aid policymakers and health educators in crafting clearer, more effective messages that better serve diverse populations, ultimately enhancing public health outcomes (Ifeanyi, 2023; Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of semantic transparency in Nigerian public service announcements and does not extend to other forms of health communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Semantic Transparency: The clarity and ease with which meaning is conveyed.

  • Public Service Announcements (PSAs): Messages intended to inform or educate the public about important issues.

  • Health Communication: The process of disseminating health-related information to the public.
