Background of the Study
Social media has transformed language use in Nigeria, with Twitter emerging as a significant platform for public discourse. Hashtags, as a core feature of Twitter, serve not only as search tools but also as pragmatic devices that frame discussions and signal group affiliations. Nigerian Twitter users employ hashtags to express opinions, mobilize social movements, and convey nuanced meanings that go beyond literal interpretation (Olu, 2023). This study investigates the impact of social media trends on pragmatic practices by focusing on hashtag usage. It examines how hashtags function as markers of emphasis, irony, and solidarity, and how they shape interaction among users. The analysis explores the evolution of hashtag language, noting that while some hashtags become lexicalized over time, others reflect transient cultural phenomena. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for grasping how digital discourse influences everyday communication and public opinion in Nigeria (Chima, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
There is limited research on how Twitter hashtags influence pragmatic language use in Nigeria. The rapid evolution of social media trends often results in the emergence of new pragmatic markers that challenge traditional linguistic frameworks (Olu, 2023). This gap in research obscures our understanding of how these digital elements shape meaning and social interaction. Furthermore, inconsistent hashtag usage can lead to misinterpretation and dilute intended messages, particularly in political or social contexts. Addressing these issues is vital for comprehending the broader implications of digital language evolution and ensuring effective communication in online environments (Chima, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the pragmatic functions of hashtags on Twitter.
To assess the impact of social media trends on language use.
To propose guidelines for effective hashtag communication.
