Background of the Study
Language standardization is a cornerstone of formal education, aiming to establish uniform linguistic norms that facilitate effective communication. In Nigeria, educational broadcasts play a vital role in disseminating standardized language, which influences the phonetic aspects of Nigerian English. These broadcasts aim to unify pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical structures, ensuring consistency in language teaching and public communication (Okoye, 2023). However, the standardization process interacts with Nigeria’s diverse linguistic heritage, often leading to a tension between prescribed phonetic norms and indigenous pronunciation patterns. This interplay creates a complex linguistic environment where standardized phonetics can both enhance clarity and potentially suppress regional phonetic characteristics (Ude, 2024). Recent studies indicate that while standardization may improve mutual intelligibility in educational contexts, it might also contribute to a gradual erosion of phonetic diversity (Afolabi, 2025). This study undertakes a comparative analysis of educational broadcasts to assess the impact of language standardization on Nigerian phonetics, evaluating both its benefits and drawbacks.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of language standardization in education, its impact on Nigerian phonetics has not been sufficiently examined. The uniform phonetic patterns promoted by educational broadcasts may conflict with the inherent phonetic diversity of local dialects (Okoye, 2023). Such standardization could result in reduced phonetic variation, potentially undermining the cultural richness of Nigerian speech (Ude, 2024). The limited analysis of how educational content balances standardization with local phonetic realities leaves a gap in understanding the broader implications for language evolution and identity. Addressing this gap is crucial for developing educational policies that respect linguistic diversity while promoting effective communication (Afolabi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of language standardization on the phonetics of Nigerian educational broadcasts.

  • To compare standardized phonetic patterns with indigenous phonetic variations.

  • To assess the implications of phonetic standardization for language education and cultural preservation.

Research Questions

  • How does language standardization influence phonetic features in Nigerian educational broadcasts?

  • What are the differences between standardized phonetics and local dialectal variations?

  • What are the educational and cultural implications of these phonetic changes?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the discourse on language standardization by examining its impact on Nigerian phonetics within educational broadcasts. The findings offer insights into balancing linguistic uniformity with cultural diversity, informing educational policies and communication practices. By analyzing standardized versus local phonetic patterns, the research enhances our understanding of how standardization shapes phonetic expression in Nigeria (Okoye, 2023; Ude, 2024; Afolabi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to analyzing the impact of language standardization on phonetics in Nigerian educational broadcasts. It does not extend to other media or informal language settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Standardization: The process of establishing consistent language norms for communication.

  • Phonetics: The study of speech sounds and their production.

  • Educational Broadcasts: Media programs designed for instructional purposes.
