Background of the Study
Digital narratives have revolutionized language use by merging visual, auditory, and textual elements to create rich, multifaceted storytelling. In Nigeria, content creators on platforms like YouTube are at the forefront of this transformation, using digital narratives to convey complex semantic expressions that challenge traditional language conventions (Olu, 2023). These narratives incorporate colloquial language, code-switching, and cultural idioms, fostering innovative ways of meaning-making that resonate with a diverse audience. The integration of digital media with linguistic creativity has led to shifts in semantic expression, where conventional meanings are reinterpreted to reflect contemporary social realities (Ejem, 2024). As YouTube content becomes a dominant form of communication, understanding its influence on Nigerian semantic expression is vital. This study investigates how digital storytelling on YouTube impacts semantic expression, exploring the transformative effects of digital narratives on language evolution in Nigeria (Dada, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the transformative impact of digital narratives on language, there is limited research examining how YouTube content influences semantic expression in Nigeria. The rapid evolution of digital storytelling techniques and the integration of diverse linguistic elements often lead to semantic shifts that are not well-documented (Olu, 2023). These shifts may result in ambiguous or novel meanings that challenge traditional interpretations of language (Ejem, 2024). Without systematic analysis, the broader implications for semantic change and cultural expression remain underexplored, hindering efforts to understand the role of digital media in shaping contemporary Nigerian discourse (Dada, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze semantic expressions in Nigerian YouTube content.

  • To evaluate the impact of digital narratives on traditional semantic frameworks.

  • To explore the implications of digital storytelling for language evolution in Nigeria.

Research Questions

  • How do Nigerian digital narratives on YouTube influence semantic expression?

  • What new semantic patterns emerge from digital storytelling?

  • How do these changes affect the interpretation of meaning in Nigerian discourse?

Significance of the Study
This study examines the effect of digital narratives on semantic expression, highlighting the transformative role of YouTube in Nigerian discourse. The findings will provide valuable insights into how digital media reshape traditional language use and foster innovative semantic practices. This research is significant for linguists, media scholars, and cultural analysts interested in the intersection of digital storytelling and language evolution (Olu, 2023; Ejem, 2024; Dada, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on the impact of digital narratives in Nigerian YouTube content. It is limited to online digital storytelling and does not cover other digital media or traditional narratives.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Narratives: Storytelling using digital media, combining text, audio, and visual elements.

  • Semantic Expression: The process of conveying meaning through language.

  • YouTube Content: Video-based material published on the YouTube platform.
