Background of the Study
Cultural festivals in Nigeria serve as vibrant stages where traditional art forms meet contemporary innovation, particularly in the domains of music and dance. Over time, these festivals have become hotbeds for semantic innovation, where established terminologies are reinterpreted to encapsulate new cultural expressions and artistic trends (Ibrahim, 2023). As music and dance evolve with modern influences, traditional terms are often repurposed or supplemented with new lexicons that capture the dynamic nature of performance art. This process of semantic shift reflects broader cultural transformations, blending heritage with modernity (Nwosu, 2024). During festivals, creative expressions in music and dance give rise to novel terminologies that not only describe new artistic phenomena but also reinforce cultural identity and social cohesion. Such innovations offer insights into how language adapts to the evolving cultural landscape, acting as a mirror to societal change and creative experimentation (Chinwe, 2025). This study seeks to document and analyze these semantic innovations within festival contexts, exploring how they redefine traditional concepts and contribute to the ongoing dialogue between past and present artistic expressions.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the rich interplay between language and culture at Nigerian festivals, there is a paucity of research focusing on the semantic innovations emerging in music and dance terminology. Traditional lexicons undergo significant modifications during festivals, reflecting creative reinterpretations and the infusion of contemporary influences (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of systematic studies on these semantic shifts limits our understanding of how language evolves in response to cultural dynamism and artistic innovation (Nwosu, 2024). Without detailed analysis, the broader implications for cultural preservation and identity formation remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the semantic innovations in festival terminologies and assessing their impact on cultural narratives and artistic expression (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document semantic innovations in music and dance terminology at Nigerian cultural festivals.

  2. To analyze the factors driving these semantic shifts.

  3. To assess the impact of semantic innovations on cultural identity and artistic expression.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key semantic innovations observed in festival music and dance terminology?

  2. How do cultural and modern influences contribute to these semantic shifts?

  3. What is the impact of semantic innovations on the cultural narratives of Nigerian festivals?

Significance of the Study
This study provides novel insights into linguistic evolution within Nigerian cultural festivals by examining semantic innovations in music and dance terminology. It bridges the gap between linguistic theory and cultural studies, offering perspectives on how traditional language adapts to modern artistic practices. The findings will inform cultural preservation strategies and enhance academic discourse on language and cultural identity (Ibrahim, 2023; Nwosu, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses solely on semantic innovations in music and dance terminology within Nigerian cultural festivals. It is limited to festival-related linguistic expressions and does not extend to other cultural language usages or non-festival contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Semantic Innovations: New meanings or reinterpretations of existing terms within a linguistic context.

  • Cultural Festivals: Organized events celebrating cultural traditions, arts, and heritage.

  • Terminology: A set of specialized words and expressions associated with a particular field or cultural practice.
