Background of the Study
Stress and intonation are pivotal elements of spoken language that shape both meaning and emotional expression. In Nigeria, the linguistic landscape varies significantly between urban and rural areas, particularly among youth speakers. Urban youth, influenced by global media and diverse linguistic interactions, tend to adopt speech patterns marked by dynamic stress and intonation that differ markedly from the more traditional patterns found in rural communities (Emeka, 2023). This study examines how these prosodic features—stress, which emphasizes particular syllables, and intonation, which conveys mood and intent—are utilized by Nigerian youth to express identity, emotion, and social affiliation. Urban dialects often exhibit rapid, energetic patterns while rural speech may maintain more rhythmic and traditional patterns. These differences not only affect the clarity and effectiveness of communication but also serve as markers of social identity and cultural evolution (Uche, 2024). By comparing urban and rural youth speech, the study aims to illuminate the influence of environmental, cultural, and technological factors on prosody, thereby offering insights into how modern influences are reshaping traditional linguistic practices (Nnamdi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
There is a notable gap in the literature concerning the comparative analysis of stress and intonation in Nigerian youth speech across urban and rural settings. While previous research has examined prosody in isolation, insufficient attention has been given to how combined prosodic features influence social identity and communication effectiveness (Emeka, 2023). The distinct differences between urban modernization and rural tradition create divergent prosodic patterns that are not yet fully understood (Uche, 2024). This gap limits our comprehension of how these linguistic variations contribute to broader cultural and communicative dynamics. By addressing this gap, the study seeks to clarify the role of prosodic differences in shaping the linguistic identity of Nigerian youth, thus providing a basis for informed educational and social policies (Nnamdi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the appraisal of stress and intonation in Nigerian youth speech, comparing urban and rural dialects. It focuses exclusively on spoken communication among youth and does not extend to other age groups or linguistic features beyond prosody.
