Background of the study

Nigerian proverbs are an integral part of the cultural heritage of the country, serving as vehicles for wisdom, moral guidance, and social commentary. This study appraises the pragmatic contexts in which Yoruba and Igbo proverbs are used, exploring how these expressions function within everyday communication to convey nuanced meanings and cultural values (Uche, 2023). Proverbs are not merely linguistic ornaments; they are pragmatic tools that facilitate interpersonal communication, resolve conflicts, and reinforce social norms. By analyzing a diverse collection of proverbs from Yoruba and Igbo traditions, the research examines how context shapes interpretation and usage. The study considers factors such as setting, audience, and speaker intention, demonstrating that the pragmatic functions of proverbs extend beyond literal meaning to encompass irony, humor, and indirect criticism (Chinwe, 2024). Furthermore, the research highlights the role of proverbs in preserving cultural identity and transmitting traditional knowledge across generations (Ifeoma, 2025). This investigation contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between language, culture, and pragmatics in Nigerian society.

Statement of the problem

Despite the cultural significance of Nigerian proverbs, there is a paucity of research on their pragmatic contexts, particularly in Yoruba and Igbo traditions. The multifaceted functions of proverbs in communication are often overlooked in favor of literal interpretations (Uche, 2023). This gap hinders our comprehension of how proverbs operate as pragmatic tools in real-life interactions, affecting social cohesion and cultural transmission. Without a systematic analysis of the contextual factors influencing proverb usage, scholars risk missing critical insights into the role of traditional wisdom in contemporary society. This study aims to address this gap by examining the pragmatic dimensions of proverbs and their implications for effective communication (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To document and analyze the pragmatic functions of Yoruba and Igbo proverbs.

2. To assess the contextual factors that influence proverb usage.

3. To evaluate the role of proverbs in preserving cultural identity.

Research questions:

1. How do Yoruba and Igbo proverbs function pragmatically in communication?

2. What contextual factors affect their interpretation?

3. How do proverbs contribute to cultural preservation?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the pragmatic dimensions of Nigerian proverbs, shedding light on their role in everyday communication and cultural transmission. The findings will enhance our understanding of how language and culture interact, offering valuable insights for educators, linguists, and cultural practitioners (Ifeoma, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is confined to the pragmatic contexts of Yoruba and Igbo proverbs. It does not extend to proverbs from other Nigerian cultures or languages.

Definitions of terms:

1. Pragmatic Contexts: The situational factors that influence language use and interpretation.

2. Proverbs: Short, traditional sayings that convey wisdom or advice.

3. Cultural Transmission: The process by which cultural knowledge and values are passed down through generations.
