Background of the Study
Political discourse in Nigeria is subject to rapid change, driven by evolving social, economic, and technological influences. This study examines the morphosyntactic evolution in Nigerian political discourse by comparing election speeches across different administrations. Morphosyntactic features—such as sentence structure, verb conjugation, and nominal phrase construction—play a critical role in shaping persuasive political messages (Eze, 2023). Over recent election cycles, political leaders have adapted their language to engage diverse voter bases, incorporating code-switching, simplified syntax, and new lexical items. This comparative analysis focuses on how these linguistic changes reflect broader shifts in political ideology and communication strategies. The study analyzes a corpus of election speeches, employing both quantitative morphosyntactic analysis and qualitative discourse analysis to trace trends over time (Okeke, 2023; Adebayo, 2024). It also considers how media exposure and public opinion feedback contribute to the evolution of political language. The findings will illuminate the relationship between language change and political effectiveness in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian political speeches are a vital medium for public persuasion, there is limited research on the morphosyntactic evolution within this discourse. Shifts in sentence structure and word formation may impact message clarity and voter engagement, yet these changes remain underdocumented (Eze, 2023). The absence of comparative analysis over multiple election cycles hinders our understanding of how political language adapts to contemporary challenges and public expectations (Okeke, 2023). This gap restricts the development of effective political communication strategies and undermines efforts to standardize political discourse. This study addresses these concerns by systematically comparing morphosyntactic features in election speeches, providing insights into the dynamics of language evolution in Nigerian politics (Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian election speeches.

  2. To compare these features across different election cycles.

  3. To evaluate the impact of linguistic changes on political persuasion.

Research Questions:

  1. What morphosyntactic changes are evident in recent election speeches?

  2. How do these changes correlate with shifts in political messaging?

  3. What are the implications for effective political communication?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic evolution in Nigerian political discourse, contributing to our understanding of language change in high-stakes communication. The insights will aid political strategists, linguists, and educators in refining political messaging and enhancing democratic engagement (Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to election speeches from selected Nigerian administrations and does not include other forms of political discourse.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Morphosyntax: The study of the structure and formation of words and sentences.

  • Political Discourse: The language used in political communication.

  • Election Speeches: Public addresses delivered by political candidates during election campaigns.
