Background of the Study
Media in Nigeria is a powerful force that reflects and shapes language use across the country. Regional broadcasts in the north and south exhibit distinctive syntactic structures, influenced by local dialects, cultural norms, and educational backgrounds. In northern regions, broadcasts often incorporate features derived from Hausa and other local languages, whereas southern media tend to favor a blend of Standard Nigerian English and indigenous languages such as Igbo and Yoruba (Okeke, 2023). This study examines these syntactic differences by comparing transcripts of radio and television broadcasts from northern and southern regions. It investigates how sentence complexity, clause structures, and word order vary and the extent to which regional media reinforce or challenge standardized language norms. The research also considers the role of media in shaping public perceptions of language, with implications for literacy and language policy. By analyzing syntactic patterns across regions, the study aims to uncover the underlying factors that drive linguistic variation in Nigerian media (Adebayo, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
There is limited comparative research on how regional media in Nigeria influence syntactic variation, particularly between the north and the south. Differences in syntactic structures may lead to varying levels of comprehension and impact audience engagement, yet these factors remain underexplored (Okeke, 2023). This research gap complicates efforts to develop uniform language standards and educational practices, as regional broadcasts may perpetuate non-standard syntactic norms. Inconsistencies in language use between regions can also affect national unity and the effectiveness of mass communication (Adebayo, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025). This study aims to address these issues by systematically comparing syntactic patterns in northern and southern broadcasts.

The findings will benefit media practitioners, educators, and policymakers by promoting clearer communication and enhancing national linguistic cohesion (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to radio and television broadcasts from selected northern and southern regions and does not include online media.
