Background of the Study
YouTube vlogs have emerged as a powerful medium through which Nigerians express personal narratives, cultural identities, and socio-political commentary. Digital narratives on YouTube often incorporate innovative semantic expressions that differ markedly from traditional spoken and written language (Ibrahim, 2025). This study explores how Nigerian YouTube vloggers utilize semantic devices—such as metaphors, idiomatic expressions, and contextual cues—to construct layered meanings and engage diverse audiences. Vlogs allow creators to experiment with language in real time, blending humor, emotion, and rhetorical questions to produce dynamic content that resonates with viewers (Eze, 2023). The research analyzes vlog transcripts and viewer interactions to determine how semantic expressions are shaped by digital constraints and audience feedback. In doing so, the study investigates whether digital narratives contribute to a richer, more adaptive semantic repertoire in Nigerian English, and how these innovations influence public discourse and cultural identity (Akinola, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although digital narratives have transformed language use, there is limited research on how YouTube vlogs affect semantic expression in Nigerian English. The creative language practices observed in vlogs often depart from conventional semantic norms, leading to potential ambiguities or misunderstandings (Ibrahim, 2025). This research gap restricts our understanding of how digital media influences semantic innovation and may have broader implications for language evolution and education (Eze, 2023). The absence of systematic analysis on these digital practices hinders the development of strategies to harness their potential for effective communication. This study seeks to address these issues by examining semantic expression in Nigerian YouTube vlogs, providing insights into digital language trends and their impact on cultural narratives (Akinola, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze semantic devices used in Nigerian YouTube vlogs.
To assess the impact of digital narratives on language meaning.
To evaluate the broader implications for public discourse and education.
Research Questions:
What semantic strategies are employed by Nigerian vloggers?
How do these strategies affect audience interpretation?
What are the long-term implications of digital semantic innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the evolution of semantic expression in Nigerian digital narratives. The findings will inform educators, media professionals, and linguists on how YouTube vlogs are reshaping language use and cultural expression, supporting effective communication strategies in the digital age (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to YouTube vlogs produced by Nigerian content creators and does not extend to other digital media platforms.
Definitions of Terms:
Semantic Expression: The way meaning is constructed in language.
Digital Narratives: Stories and content shared via digital platforms.
YouTube Vlogs: Video blogs posted on YouTube that share personal or cultural narratives.
