Background of the Study:
Text messaging has revolutionized communication among Nigerian youth, leading to notable phonological simplifications in everyday language. This study examines the phonological changes that occur in text messaging, focusing on processes such as vowel reduction, consonant elision, and simplified stress patterns (Umeh, 2023). Youth tend to adopt these strategies to enhance speed and efficiency in digital communication. The research analyzes a corpus of text messages to identify common simplifications and investigates how these adaptations affect the intelligibility and evolution of Nigerian English. It further explores the role of digital communication in driving linguistic change and whether these phonological modifications persist in spoken language (Akinola, 2024; Chinwe, 2025). The study aims to contribute to our understanding of how technology influences language and to inform educators and policymakers about potential impacts on literacy.

Statement of the Problem:
Although text messaging is widely used among Nigerian youth, there is limited research on the phonological simplifications that emerge in this context. The reduction of phonetic details in digital communication may lead to ambiguities and affect language development (Umeh, 2023). This gap in knowledge restricts our ability to evaluate the long-term effects of digital communication on Nigerian phonetics and literacy (Akinola, 2024). This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically analyzing text messaging trends and assessing their impact on phonological structures (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify key phonological simplifications in youth text messages.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these simplifications on communication clarity.

  3. To assess the broader implications for language evolution and literacy.

Research Questions:

  1. What phonological changes are common in Nigerian youth text messaging?

  2. How do these changes affect message clarity?

  3. What are the implications for language learning and literacy?

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it sheds light on the phonological adaptations in digital youth communication. The findings will inform educators and linguists about the evolving nature of language in the digital age, aiding in the development of strategies to support effective communication and literacy (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to analyzing text messages from Nigerian youth and does not extend to other digital platforms or age groups.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Phonological Simplification: The reduction of phonetic complexity in speech or text.

  • Text Messaging: Digital communication through short text-based messages.

  • Intelligibility: The degree to which speech or text is understood.
