Background of the Study:
Digital media platforms have transformed how language is produced and perceived. In Nigeria, video blogging (vlogging) has become a popular medium through which individuals share personal narratives and cultural commentary. This study investigates the effect of digital media on Nigerian phonetic perception by focusing on vlogs. Vloggers often adopt non-standard pronunciations, rhythmic patterns, and intonational styles that deviate from traditional broadcasting norms. The research examines how these phonetic variations influence viewer perception and comprehension. It considers factors such as editing techniques, background music, and the interplay between visual cues and speech. The study also explores whether digital exposure contributes to shifts in phonetic norms over time, potentially standardizing or diversifying pronunciation among young Nigerians (Eze, 2023). By analyzing a corpus of vlog recordings and viewer feedback, the study aims to shed light on the broader impact of digital media on phonetic evolution and language identity in Nigeria (Olu, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the popularity of video blogging, there is limited empirical research on its impact on phonetic perception in Nigeria. The non-standard pronunciations in vlogs may lead to misunderstandings and alter audience expectations regarding language norms (Eze, 2023). This lack of systematic study restricts insights into how digital media reshapes phonetic features. The transient and diverse nature of vlog content poses challenges for establishing consistent phonetic standards, potentially influencing language learning and communication (Olu, 2024). This study addresses these concerns by examining the phonetic characteristics of vlogs and their perceptual effects on viewers (Balogun, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify phonetic variations in Nigerian vlogs.

  2. To assess how these variations affect viewer perception and comprehension.

  3. To explore the long-term impact of digital media on Nigerian phonetic norms.

Research Questions:

  1. What phonetic features are most prominent in Nigerian video blogs?

  2. How do viewers perceive and interpret these phonetic variations?

  3. Are digital media driving a change in traditional phonetic norms in Nigeria?

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of digital media and phonetics, providing insights into how vlogging influences language perception in Nigeria. The findings will inform educators, media practitioners, and policymakers on adapting to evolving phonetic trends in digital communication (Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on video blogs produced by Nigerian content creators and does not cover other forms of digital media or offline speech.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Phonetic Perception: How listeners interpret and understand speech sounds.

  • Video Blogging (Vlogging): The practice of recording and sharing video content online.

  • Digital Media: Electronic platforms that facilitate communication and content sharing.
