Background of the study

Radio broadcasts in Nigeria play a critical role in disseminating information to diverse audiences. In Hausa—a language characterized by its rich phonological system—vowel harmony is a fundamental feature that affects the clarity and flow of spoken communication. Vowel harmony, the systematic alignment of vowel sounds within words, influences articulation and listener comprehension, particularly in high-stakes environments like radio broadcasting. In Nigerian radio, where precise message delivery is paramount, maintaining vowel harmony can enhance intelligibility and audience engagement. However, deviations in vowel harmony may lead to misinterpretations, affecting overall communication efficiency (Abubakar, 2023). Additionally, modern broadcasting techniques sometimes challenge traditional linguistic norms, creating an environment where the natural phonological features of Hausa are either emphasized or compromised. This study investigates the integration of vowel harmony in Hausa radio broadcasts by analyzing recorded transmissions and conducting listener surveys. The aim is to determine the extent to which vowel harmony contributes to—or detracts from—clear communication. Understanding these dynamics can provide valuable insights for broadcasters and language policymakers seeking to improve broadcast quality while preserving indigenous linguistic features (Suleiman, 2024; Bello, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the fundamental role of vowel harmony in Hausa phonology, limited empirical research exists on its impact on communication efficiency in radio broadcasts. Inconsistencies in applying vowel harmony may reduce speech clarity and impede listener comprehension, resulting in miscommunication during news and information dissemination (Abubakar, 2023). This research gap is concerning given radio’s importance in Nigeria. Without a clear understanding of how vowel harmony affects broadcast effectiveness, broadcasters risk compromising the quality of communication. This study aims to bridge that gap by investigating the relationship between vowel harmony and communicative clarity in Hausa radio broadcasts, thereby providing recommendations for optimizing linguistic practices to enhance overall communication efficiency (Suleiman, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To analyze the manifestation of vowel harmony in Hausa radio broadcasts.

2. To assess its impact on listener comprehension and communication efficiency.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing broadcast clarity through proper vowel harmony.

Research questions:

1. How is vowel harmony implemented in Hausa radio broadcasts?

2. What is its effect on listener comprehension?

3. What measures can improve the use of vowel harmony in broadcasts?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the role of vowel harmony in enhancing communication efficiency in Hausa radio broadcasts. By linking traditional phonological features with modern broadcast practices, the findings will benefit broadcasters, linguists, and policymakers, offering insights to improve message clarity and preserve indigenous language standards (Bello, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study focuses solely on the effect of vowel harmony in Hausa radio broadcasts in Nigeria. It does not cover other languages or media formats.

Definitions of terms:

1. Vowel Harmony: The systematic alignment of vowel sounds within a word.

2. Communication Efficiency: The effectiveness with which a message is transmitted and understood.

3. Hausa: A Chadic language widely spoken in Nigeria.
