Background of the Study
Social media virality has emerged as a powerful force in shaping language use, particularly in Nigeria where digital platforms are widely embraced. Viral video captions, often shared on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, exhibit distinct morphosyntactic patterns that reflect rapid language change and creative expression (Umeh, 2023). This study investigates how the virality of social media content influences morphological and syntactic features in Nigerian digital discourse. Captions tend to incorporate abbreviated forms, non-standard word orders, and innovative compound constructions that deviate from traditional norms. The research analyzes a corpus of viral video captions to identify recurring patterns, examining the role of digital culture, user engagement, and algorithmic amplification in driving these changes (Akinola, 2024). By combining quantitative corpus analysis with qualitative user interviews, the study aims to determine how viral trends contribute to morphosyntactic innovation and what implications this holds for language evolution in the digital age (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the transformative impact of social media virality on language, there is a paucity of research on how viral video captions shape Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns. The rapid, informal language used in these captions often deviates from established grammatical norms, potentially leading to widespread non-standard usage (Umeh, 2023). This inconsistency may affect language education and communication standards, yet its mechanisms remain underexplored. Furthermore, the transient nature of viral content poses challenges for linguistic analysis, leaving a gap in understanding the long-term implications of these digital trends (Akinola, 2024). This study addresses these gaps by systematically examining viral video captions and their influence on morphosyntax (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To analyze morphosyntactic patterns in viral video captions.

  • To assess the impact of social media virality on language use.

  • To propose recommendations for balancing innovation with linguistic clarity.

Research Questions:

  • What morphosyntactic features characterize viral video captions?

  • How does virality influence language adaptation?

  • What are the implications for standard language usage?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the effects of social media virality on Nigerian morphosyntax, offering insights into digital language evolution. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and media professionals by highlighting how viral trends shape language use and informing strategies for effective digital communication (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to viral video captions on selected social media platforms and does not include other digital media formats.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Morphosyntax: The study of word formation and sentence structure.

  • Viral Content: Media that rapidly gains widespread popularity.

  • Video Captions: Text accompanying digital videos to convey additional meaning.
