Background of the Study
Contemporary Nigerian novels are celebrated for their linguistic creativity and morphological richness. Authors in Nigeria draw on a blend of indigenous languages, English, and pidgin to craft narratives that reflect diverse cultural experiences (Eze, 2023). This study investigates the morphological structures—such as affixation, compounding, and reduplication—employed by novelists to enrich their texts. These morphological innovations not only expand the lexicon but also infuse the narratives with local flavor and cultural nuance. By analyzing a corpus of contemporary novels, the research examines how morphological complexity contributes to character development, thematic depth, and narrative style. The study considers the impact of globalization, language contact, and digital media on the evolution of Nigerian literary language, revealing how modern writers balance traditional expressions with innovative word formation (Ibrahim, 2025). Through detailed linguistic analysis and comparative literary criticism, this research aims to document the morphological creativity that defines modern Nigerian literature and to explore its implications for cultural identity and literary evolution.

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread recognition of morphological richness in Nigerian literature, scholarly research has yet to systematically analyze the specific morphological processes that contribute to this richness. Existing studies often provide general commentary without detailed empirical analysis of word formation techniques (Eze, 2023). This gap limits understanding of how morphological innovation shapes narrative style and cultural expression in contemporary novels. Moreover, the rapid evolution of language in response to global influences may further complicate traditional morphological structures. This study seeks to fill this void by providing an in-depth investigation of morphological processes in Nigerian novels, thereby enhancing our appreciation of linguistic creativity and offering insights for literary criticism and language preservation (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To document key morphological processes in contemporary Nigerian novels.

  • To analyze the impact of these processes on narrative style and cultural expression.

  • To propose implications for the preservation of indigenous linguistic features.

Research Questions:

  • What morphological structures are predominantly used in Nigerian novels?

  • How do these structures enhance literary expression?

  • What external factors influence morphological innovation in Nigerian literature?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides a systematic analysis of the morphological richness in Nigerian novels. The insights gained will inform literary criticism, cultural studies, and language preservation efforts by highlighting how linguistic innovation contributes to narrative depth and cultural identity (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to a selected corpus of contemporary Nigerian novels and does not cover other literary forms or historical texts.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Morphological Richness: The complexity and variety of word formation processes in a text.

  • Affixation: The addition of prefixes or suffixes to a root word.

  • Compounding: The creation of new words by combining two or more words.
