Background of the Study
Mobile communication has become ubiquitous in urban centers such as Lagos, profoundly influencing language use and syntax. SMS language, characterized by abbreviations, acronyms, and simplified syntactic structures, represents a significant departure from traditional grammatical norms (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study examines how the constraints of mobile texting—such as character limits and the need for rapid transmission—affect syntactic constructions in Nigerian English. The research explores the evolution of sentence structure, word order, and punctuation in SMS language, investigating how these changes reflect broader shifts in communication practices. Furthermore, the study considers the role of digital literacy and generational differences in shaping syntactic adaptations. The interplay between formal language education and informal mobile communication creates a dynamic environment where language evolves rapidly (Adeola, 2024). By analyzing a corpus of SMS messages from Lagos residents, the study seeks to identify patterns in syntactic simplification and innovation. The findings aim to contribute to discussions on language change in the digital age and inform educational strategies that bridge formal and informal communication modes (Babatunde, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing prevalence of SMS language in Lagos, there is limited understanding of how mobile communication influences Nigerian syntax. The rapid, informal nature of texting has led to syntactic shortcuts that may conflict with standard grammatical rules (Oluwaseun, 2023). This divergence raises concerns about the long-term impact on language proficiency and literacy. Additionally, the lack of systematic research on the syntactic features of SMS language hinders efforts to integrate digital communication trends into educational curricula. Such gaps in understanding may lead to a disconnect between formal language instruction and everyday communication practices, potentially undermining language development (Adeola, 2024). This study seeks to bridge this gap by analyzing syntactic patterns in SMS messages and assessing their implications for Nigerian English (Babatunde, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the syntactic structures of SMS language in Lagos.

  2. To determine the impact of mobile communication constraints on syntax.

  3. To provide recommendations for integrating SMS language trends into language education.

Research Questions:

  1. What syntactic patterns are most prevalent in Lagos SMS messages?

  2. How do mobile communication constraints affect sentence structure and grammar?

  3. What strategies can reconcile SMS language with standard grammatical instruction?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of mobile communication on Nigerian syntax through SMS language analysis. The findings offer insights into the evolution of language in digital contexts, informing both linguistic theory and educational practices. By addressing syntactic innovations arising from mobile texting, the research contributes to better alignment between formal language instruction and everyday communication. These insights are valuable for educators, linguists, and policymakers aiming to bridge the gap between traditional language norms and modern communication practices (Babatunde, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the syntactic features of SMS language in Lagos. It focuses solely on text-based communication and does not include other digital communication forms or regions. Data are drawn from selected SMS samples.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Mobile Communication: The exchange of information via mobile devices.

  • SMS Language: The informal language used in text messaging, characterized by abbreviations and simplified syntax.

  • Syntax: The set of rules that govern the structure of sentences.
