Background of the Study
Phonological processes are critical for understanding the sound systems of languages, particularly in a linguistically diverse country like Nigeria. Igbo, one of the major indigenous languages, exhibits distinctive phonological features such as vowel length, which plays a significant role in differentiating meaning. This study focuses on the comparative analysis of vowel length in Igbo, exploring how this phonological process functions across different dialects and influences intelligibility and communication (Chinwe, 2023). Vowel length in Igbo is not merely a phonetic detail but a semantic marker that can alter word meanings significantly. The study examines how speakers across various regions employ vowel length and how these practices are evolving under the influence of modernization and language contact (Eze, 2024). By comparing data from different Igbo-speaking communities, the research aims to highlight both the commonalities and the variations in vowel length usage. It also considers the pedagogical implications for language teaching and preservation, as well as the challenges of transcribing these phonological nuances accurately in written form. Statement of the Problem
Although vowel length is a critical phonological feature in Igbo, there is a scarcity of systematic research examining its variations and implications. Inconsistent documentation and transcription practices have led to challenges in accurately capturing this feature, resulting in potential misinterpretation of meanings and difficulties in language instruction (Chinwe, 2023). Furthermore, the influence of dialectal differences on vowel length remains underexplored, creating a gap in our understanding of its communicative significance (Eze, 2024). The lack of standardized measurement methods exacerbates the issue, limiting the potential for comprehensive phonological analysis. This study seeks to address these challenges by providing a detailed comparative analysis of vowel length across Igbo dialects, utilizing modern acoustic tools to enhance reliability and precision in measurement (Ndukwe, 2025).
