Background of the Study
Radio talk shows in Nigeria serve as an important forum for public discourse, bringing together speakers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. In these settings, code-switching between languages, particularly Yoruba and Igbo, is a common communicative strategy that reflects the country’s multilingual reality. This study investigates the syntactic patterns that emerge when speakers switch between Yoruba and Igbo during radio talk shows, highlighting how such practices influence message clarity and audience engagement (Obi, 2023). Code-switching, which involves alternating between two or more languages in conversation, is often used to signal group identity, negotiate meaning, or fill lexical gaps. The syntactic integration of elements from Yoruba and Igbo not only demonstrates linguistic flexibility but also poses challenges for maintaining grammatical consistency. Recent research suggests that code-switching is a deliberate and contextually motivated practice that enhances communicative efficiency in multilingual settings (Okoye, 2024). The study employs qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the frequency, structure, and communicative functions of code-switching in radio talk shows. It further examines the socio-cultural implications of mixing languages in public discourse, as well as the potential impact on language preservation and audience interpretation (Ibrahim, 2025). By focusing on syntactic patterns, this research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of bilingual communication practices in Nigeria’s dynamic media environment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of code-switching in Nigerian radio talk shows, there is a lack of systematic research on the underlying syntactic patterns that govern this practice. The mixing of Yoruba and Igbo during live broadcasts can result in grammatical inconsistencies that may obscure meaning and hinder effective communication (Obi, 2023). Moreover, while code-switching is often used as a tool to bridge linguistic gaps, its inconsistent application may lead to confusion among listeners, particularly those not fluent in both languages (Okoye, 2024). This inconsistency underscores a broader problem: the absence of standardized frameworks to analyze and understand bilingual syntactic integration in dynamic media contexts. Addressing this gap is essential for improving communication strategies in multilingual broadcasts and preserving the linguistic integrity of both Yoruba and Igbo.

The findings contribute to academic debates on code-switching and practical guidelines for radio practitioners, ultimately supporting better communication in a linguistically diverse society (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses exclusively on syntactic patterns in Yoruba and Igbo code-switching in selected Nigerian radio talk shows. It does not address other language combinations or media formats. Data are limited to specific programs, which may not represent the full spectrum of bilingual practices in Nigerian broadcasting.
