Background of the Study

This study investigates how stress and intonation—key components of prosody—differ between these settings and what these differences reveal about social identity, education, and cultural adaptation. Urban youth often adopt a more dynamic intonation influenced by multicultural interactions and modern media, whereas rural youth may retain more conservative prosodic patterns that reflect local heritage (Mensah, 2024). By comparing these variations, the research aims to understand the underlying factors driving changes in speech patterns and their implications for communication and identity formation. Statement of the Problem
The divergence in stress and intonation patterns between urban and rural Nigerian youth presents a complex challenge in understanding contemporary language change. This divergence can result in communication barriers and contribute to social stratification.
