Background of the Study :
Digital literacy has become a cornerstone of effective communication in the 21st century. In Nigeria, where online platforms are increasingly used for information exchange, pragmatic awareness—the ability to use language appropriately in various contexts—has taken on new importance. This study examines how digital literacy influences pragmatic awareness among Nigerian online communicators. Through analysis of online discussions, emails, and social media interactions, the research investigates how users employ pragmatic markers such as politeness strategies, context-specific language, and emotive cues. Digital literacy may enhance the ability to navigate online discourse by equipping users with the skills to interpret and produce contextually appropriate language (Eze, 2023). The study aims to assess the correlation between digital literacy levels and pragmatic competence, identifying areas where increased training could improve communication effectiveness. The findings will contribute to digital communication strategies and educational programs aimed at enhancing pragmatic awareness in online environments (Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the importance of digital literacy in online communication, there is limited research on its effect on pragmatic awareness among Nigerian users. Most studies have focused on technical skills and content generation, neglecting the subtle pragmatic aspects that ensure effective discourse. This gap limits our understanding of how digital literacy influences the ability to use contextually appropriate language and manage online interactions effectively. Without a clear analysis of pragmatic competence in digital communication, educators and policymakers may struggle to develop programs that foster comprehensive digital communication skills (Eze, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate digital literacy levels among Nigerian online users.
To assess their pragmatic awareness in online communication.
To recommend strategies to enhance pragmatic competence.
Research Questions:
How does digital literacy influence online pragmatic awareness?
What pragmatic markers are used by digitally literate individuals?
How can digital literacy programs be improved?
Significance of the Study :
This study informs digital education and communication strategies by linking digital literacy to pragmatic competence. Its findings will help educators and policymakers design interventions that improve online communication skills (Eze, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to online communication among Nigerian users and does not include offline digital literacy.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms.
Pragmatic Awareness: Understanding how to use language appropriately in context.
Online Communication: The exchange of information via digital media.
