Background of the Study :
Nigeria’s linguistic diversity is reflected in the phonetic details of rural and urban speech. Rural areas tend to preserve traditional dialects with distinct phonetic features, while urban speech often incorporates influences from multiple languages and media, resulting in blended dialects. This study compares the phonetic details of Nigerian rural and urban speech, focusing on variations in pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns. By collecting and analyzing recordings from various regions, the research examines how factors such as migration, education, and media exposure influence dialectal differences (Okeke, 2023). The study aims to document these differences and assess their implications for communication clarity and cultural identity. Understanding these phonetic nuances is crucial for language planning and for developing speech recognition technologies that accommodate Nigeria’s linguistic diversity (Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem :
Despite Nigeria’s rich dialectal diversity, there is limited comparative research on the phonetic differences between rural and urban speech. Existing studies often focus on isolated dialects without providing a holistic analysis of how urbanization and modernization affect phonetic patterns. This gap hinders efforts to preserve linguistic heritage and to adapt speech technologies for diverse dialects. Without systematic analysis, the impact of urban influences on traditional rural speech may be underestimated, potentially affecting communication clarity and cultural continuity (Okeke, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare phonetic features in rural and urban speech.
To analyze the impact of modernization on dialectal variation.
To assess implications for communication and language technology.
Research Questions:
What phonetic differences exist between rural and urban speech?
How does urbanization influence dialectal pronunciation?
What are the implications for speech recognition and language preservation?
Significance of the Study :
This study offers essential insights into Nigeria’s dialectal diversity, informing linguists and technologists on the phonetic variations critical for effective communication and language preservation (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to selected rural and urban areas in Nigeria and does not cover all dialectal variations.
Definitions of Terms:
Phonetic Details: Specific characteristics of speech sounds.
Dialectal Differences: Variations in language features among regional dialects.
Urbanization: The process of cities growing and influencing language.
