Background of the Study :
Digital culture has dramatically reshaped language, with social media platforms serving as dynamic arenas for morphosyntactic adaptation. In Nigeria, users frequently blend traditional language structures with innovative digital expressions, resulting in hybrid forms that reflect both local heritage and global trends. This study examines morphosyntactic adaptations in Nigerian social media language by comparing text from platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Key areas of focus include changes in word order, novel use of affixes, and creative syntactic constructions that diverge from standard language norms (Uche, 2023). The research explores how these adaptations facilitate rapid communication, convey identity, and foster online communities. It also assesses the extent to which digital practices are influencing the evolution of formal language structures. Findings will provide insights into the mechanisms of language change in digital contexts and offer a framework for understanding the interplay between traditional linguistic rules and modern communication demands (Olatunde, 2024).
Statement of the Problem :
Although digital communication has led to significant morphosyntactic innovation, there is limited comparative research on how these adaptations manifest in Nigerian social media language. Existing studies often focus on isolated linguistic phenomena rather than examining the broader morphosyntactic shifts occurring across different platforms. This gap restricts our understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving digital language evolution and hampers the development of strategies to bridge informal and formal language use. Addressing this gap is critical for educators and policymakers who need to adapt language teaching and media regulation to accommodate these changes (Uche, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To identify morphosyntactic adaptations in Nigerian social media.
To compare linguistic patterns across multiple platforms.
To assess the impact of digital culture on formal language structures.
Research Questions:
What morphosyntactic changes are evident in social media language?
How do these adaptations differ by platform?
What are the implications for formal language use?
Significance of the Study :
This study offers important insights into the evolution of language in the digital age, informing educators and policymakers on managing the interplay between traditional and digital linguistic forms (Uche, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to digital texts from Nigerian social media platforms and does not extend to offline language practices.
Definitions of Terms:
