Background of the Study :
Cultural preservation initiatives in Nigeria increasingly emphasize the revitalization of indigenous languages. Morphology, the study of word formation, plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of these languages. Indigenous languages carry rich cultural histories and are often characterized by complex morphological processes such as agglutination, reduplication, and intricate affixation. This study explores how efforts to preserve indigenous languages influence morphological practices in Nigeria. By examining language revitalization programs and educational curricula, the research seeks to identify strategies that promote morphological integrity and innovation. Indigenous language revitalization not only safeguards cultural identity but also enriches the linguistic diversity of the nation. Recent initiatives by governmental and non-governmental organizations have aimed at integrating traditional language forms into modern contexts, thereby affecting word formation processes (Olatunde, 2024). This study investigates these changes, documenting both challenges and successes, and evaluates the overall impact on language structure and cultural continuity.
Statement of the Problem :
Despite efforts to revitalize indigenous languages in Nigeria, there is insufficient research on how cultural preservation impacts morphological structures. Most existing studies focus on vocabulary or syntax, overlooking the deep morphological features that underpin language identity. This gap hampers effective planning and implementation of language preservation strategies, as policymakers may not fully understand the morphological nuances that need safeguarding. Without a systematic analysis, critical aspects of indigenous language structure risk being lost in modernization efforts, undermining cultural preservation (Olatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine morphological structures in indigenous languages.
To assess the impact of revitalization efforts on word formation.
To recommend strategies for effective morphological preservation.
Research Questions:
How do preservation efforts affect indigenous morphological structures?
What morphological changes are observed in revitalized languages?
How can preservation strategies be optimized?
Significance of the Study :
This research provides essential insights into the intersection of cultural preservation and linguistic morphology. Its findings will support language revitalization programs and inform policy, ensuring that indigenous morphological features are maintained and celebrated (Olatunde, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on selected indigenous languages in Nigeria undergoing revitalization and does not extend to all Nigerian languages.
Definitions of Terms:
