Background of the Study
Modern Nigerian poetry reflects a dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation, particularly in its use of morphological processes. Poets today often experiment with word formation techniques—such as affixation, blending, and compounding—to create novel lexical items that capture contemporary experiences and cultural shifts (Chinwe, 2023). This study investigates the morphological processes in modern Nigerian poetry by comparing lexical innovations across a selection of contemporary works. Through detailed textual analysis, the research explores how poets break away from conventional language norms to forge a distinct poetic voice that resonates with modern audiences. These innovations not only enrich the literary landscape but also serve as a means of preserving cultural identity in a rapidly globalizing world. Statement of the Problem
Although modern Nigerian poetry is celebrated for its innovative use of language, there is limited research on the specific morphological processes that drive lexical innovation in this genre. Existing studies often focus on thematic and stylistic analysis, neglecting the underlying word formation strategies that contribute to poetic expression. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how morphological creativity enhances literary quality and reflects cultural evolution. Without systematic analysis, critical aspects of language transformation in modern poetry may remain undocumented, undermining efforts to appreciate and preserve the linguistic innovations of contemporary Nigerian poets (Chinwe, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
