Background of the Study
Modern Nigerian poetry reflects a dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation, particularly in its use of morphological processes. Poets today often experiment with word formation techniques—such as affixation, blending, and compounding—to create novel lexical items that capture contemporary experiences and cultural shifts (Chinwe, 2023). This study investigates the morphological processes in modern Nigerian poetry by comparing lexical innovations across a selection of contemporary works. Through detailed textual analysis, the research explores how poets break away from conventional language norms to forge a distinct poetic voice that resonates with modern audiences. These innovations not only enrich the literary landscape but also serve as a means of preserving cultural identity in a rapidly globalizing world. The study examines how morphological creativity in poetry contributes to thematic expression, emotional depth, and aesthetic value, offering insights into the evolution of Nigerian literary language (Chinwe, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although modern Nigerian poetry is celebrated for its innovative use of language, there is limited research on the specific morphological processes that drive lexical innovation in this genre. Existing studies often focus on thematic and stylistic analysis, neglecting the underlying word formation strategies that contribute to poetic expression. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how morphological creativity enhances literary quality and reflects cultural evolution. Without systematic analysis, critical aspects of language transformation in modern poetry may remain undocumented, undermining efforts to appreciate and preserve the linguistic innovations of contemporary Nigerian poets (Chinwe, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To identify morphological processes used in modern Nigerian poetry.
To compare lexical innovations across selected poems.
To assess the impact of these innovations on thematic expression.
Research Questions
What morphological techniques are prevalent in modern Nigerian poetry?
How do these techniques contribute to lexical innovation?
What is the effect of morphological creativity on poetic expression?

This study provides valuable insights into the linguistic creativity of modern Nigerian poets, informing literary criticism and language studies. The findings will aid educators, literary scholars, and cultural preservationists in appreciating the evolving nature of Nigerian poetic language (Chinwe, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing morphological processes in selected modern Nigerian poems and does not cover other literary genres.
