Background of the study
Media has become a transformative force in shaping language, and Tiv communities in Benue State are no exception. Traditional Tiv language, once passed down orally through generations, is now increasingly influenced by digital and broadcast media. Television, radio, and social media platforms introduce new vocabulary, alter grammatical structures, and blend traditional expressions with modern slang (Ogbonna, 2023). This media-driven language change can both enrich and erode traditional linguistic forms. While modernization may enhance communication efficiency and cultural dynamism, it may also lead to the loss of heritage expressions and affect the community’s cultural identity. This study appraises how media influences language change in Tiv communities by analyzing media content, surveying community members, and interviewing cultural leaders. The goal is to assess the balance between linguistic innovation and preservation, identifying the implications of media-driven changes for cultural continuity and identity (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Media-driven language change in Tiv communities has led to significant shifts in linguistic practices that may undermine traditional cultural identity. The rapid adoption of global slang and digital language forms risks diluting the richness of Tiv expressions (Ogbonna, 2023). This study seeks to identify the factors driving these changes and evaluate their impact on language preservation, aiming to propose strategies that balance modernization with cultural retention (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate media influence on Tiv language change.
  2. To identify specific linguistic shifts.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving traditional language.

Research questions:

  1. What media factors drive Tiv language change?
  2. What traditional elements are most affected?
  3. How can cultural heritage be preserved amid media influence?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of media on language evolution in Tiv communities, providing insights for cultural preservation and media policy. The findings will guide efforts to maintain linguistic heritage while embracing modernization (Ogbonna, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Tiv communities in Benue State; excludes other influences and regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Media-driven language change: Linguistic shifts influenced by digital and broadcast media.
  • Tiv language: The indigenous language of the Tiv people.
  • Cultural heritage: Traditions and practices passed down through generations.
