Background of the study
Modern media has profoundly impacted the evolution of language, particularly in the realm of popular culture. Nigerian Pidgin, known for its adaptability and vibrant lexicon, has been rapidly evolving due to its widespread use on television, radio, social media, and music. These platforms not only disseminate new vocabulary and expressions but also shape the language’s structure and style (Adamu, 2023). As Nigerian Pidgin becomes increasingly intertwined with global cultural trends, it experiences both enrichment and transformation. While media exposure fosters creative linguistic innovation, it also risks diluting traditional forms as colloquial expressions are modified for broader appeal. This study investigates how modern media influences the evolution of Nigerian Pidgin by analyzing media content, song lyrics, and online communications. The goal is to understand the balance between innovation and preservation within the language and its implications for cultural identity in popular culture (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Modern media, while driving innovation in Nigerian Pidgin, may also contribute to the erosion of its traditional linguistic structures. The adoption of global trends and simplified language for mass appeal can dilute the richness of Nigerian Pidgin, potentially undermining its role as a cultural marker (Adamu, 2023). This study seeks to identify the key factors driving these changes and assess their impact on the language’s evolution.
