Background of the study
Contemporary music in Nigeria serves as a powerful medium for expressing cultural discourse, often utilizing Nigerian Pidgin as its lingua franca. Nigerian Pidgin's inherent flexibility and colloquial charm enable musicians to convey cultural narratives, social commentaries, and political critiques in an accessible manner (Adamu, 2023). In urban centers, songs in Nigerian Pidgin blend traditional idioms with modern slang, creating a hybrid cultural discourse that resonates with a diverse audience. This evolving language has become a tool for social commentary, bridging generational and regional divides. However, the commercialization of music may lead to oversimplification of cultural messages, and the influence of global trends might dilute indigenous expressions. This study evaluates how contemporary Nigerian music employs Nigerian Pidgin to reflect cultural discourse, analyzing song lyrics, music videos, and audience responses. It also examines the balance between preserving cultural authenticity and appealing to commercial markets, thereby assessing the role of Nigerian Pidgin in shaping modern cultural identities (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite its vibrant use, Nigerian Pidgin in contemporary music often faces challenges in maintaining nuanced cultural discourse. Commercial pressures and globalization may lead to oversimplified representations that fail to capture the depth of indigenous cultural expressions (Adamu, 2023). This study seeks to identify the factors that compromise cultural authenticity in Nigerian Pidgin music and to evaluate the implications for cultural identity.
